Best Ways to Unwind Over the Holiday Season

Gifts to buy. Cookies to bake. Friends and loved ones to see. All these activities are part of the holidays, and while they're a joy, they can leave you feeling a little stressed out. In the midst of all these holiday preparations to make sure others know how much you care, trying to meet your own needs can be a challenge. You wouldn't dream of doing any less for others, but you don't have to burn yourself out, either. Here are a few tips for how you can survive the holidays in relaxed style.

Get a Colouring Book

Colouring books aren't just for little kids anymore. Colouring books for adults are one of the hottest new trends. If you loved it back then, you surely will now, too! Designs for adults are more sophisticated than cartoons, and researchers say that colouring is a relaxing, meditative activity, so it's a great way to chill out.

Pamper Yourself

Whether your idea of a relaxing afternoon is getting a massage or a mani-pedi, you won't regret it if you take some time to pamper yourself in the midst of the busy holiday season. Get out of the cold, turn off your phone, and enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle. If your budget means that you have to save money for holiday gifts, you can always do a DIY spa experience at home.

Hit the Gym

We get it -- you're busy. With places to be, things to buy, and traditions to take part in, along with holding down your regular job, it can be so tempting to let your healthy habits slide. But when you're stressed out and spending time around crowds, your immune system will suffer if you decide you don't have time to be healthy. Getting some physical exercise is more than just a way to stay healthy, though: it's also a great way to beat stress! Take this chance to try a new type of exercise and you might fall in love with it.

Take a Tea Break

Carve out some time in your day for a relaxing tea break. Gather a selection of some of your favourite teas, including herbal, green, and black varieties. Create a ritual around having a cup of tea, so the entire process will produce instant calm. Some suggestions: light candles, use a special mug, and even drink it in a special chair. Make sure the ritual says that this time is just for you.

Get Away from It All

You need a holiday away from your holidays. While it's probably not realistic to think that you can jet to the Caribbean, you can still create an oasis in the midst of all the holiday preparations. Make plans to do something fun and not at all related to the holidays -- maybe a "girls' night out," perhaps, or an afternoon spent in a book shop with a fancy coffee? Give yourself a bit of downtime: you deserve it!

The fast pace of the holidays brings a whirlwind of fun activities and time spent with your closest friends and loved ones. There's a certain magic in the air that's special and meaningful. But remember to be good to yourself during the holidays, too. You'll enjoy the season more if you take time to relax and unwind.
