More Time For You

When we're on-the-go running from kid drop-off to work to lunch meetings to errands to carpooling to sports practice, and everything else in between, sometimes the last thing on our minds is our health. Ironically, when we have long to-do lists and big priorities to take care of, it's actually all the more important to find time to take care of you.

You can't help, support or take care of others to your best ability if you are not your best self, first.  Finding small ways to squeeze in healthful habits into your routine will boost your energy and allow you to feel better throughout even the busiest days.

Try taking a few minutes to go on a brisk ten minute walk, scheduling 2 or 3 workout classes throughout the week and prepping healthy, wholesome meals ahead of time so you have something nourishing to feed yourself and your family on those crazy, never-ending days. Incorporating superfoods into your diet is another simple but major way to boost your body's internal systems and provide your body powerful sustenance.

How superfoods can improve your health

Superfoods, such as avocados, broccoli, goji berries and cauliflower, are high in vitamins and minerals that help you stay healthy and reduce risk of illness . Superfoods can support heart health, improve energy levels, promote weight maintenance and even provide anti-ageing benefits.

Many superfoods have high fibre content, which contributes to reducing the risk of diabetes and issues with digestion. Healthy fats in certain superfoods can lower your risk of heart disease, too, while phytochemicals may lower your chances of developing cardiovascular disease. Many superfoods also help organs eliminate toxins, lower cholesterol, calm inflammation and maintain metabolism.

No wonder these foods are super! Here is a handful of some of the most popular superfoods and how they can help support your health.

  • Kale: High in vitamins A, C and K, calcium, manganese, antioxidants, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, kale helps fight arthritis, asthma and certain autoimmune disorders. Kale and other leafy greens, like spinach, cabbage, broccoli, collard greens and Swiss chard, also boost bone health, and support vision.
  • Acai berries: High in antioxidants, healthy fats, vitamin B, fibre, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus, acai supports normal blood sugar and repair oxidative damage. Acai and other berries, like blueberries, strawberries and cranberries, provide the body an abundance of vitamins, phytochemicals and soluble fibre. Some plant compounds and antioxidants in berries may slow cancer cell growth and protect cognitive function.
  • Avocado: High in monounsaturated fats and vitamins E, A and B6, avocado helps lower cholesterol, ease arthritis, promote skin health, absorb carotenoids and lower risk of heart disease, cancer and vision loss.
