What are Green Foods?

Nutrition plays a critical role in good health and longevity. The foods you eat fuel your body, and help maintain good health. Without proper nutrition, your body cannot function to its full potential, leaving you tired and more likely to develop chronic illnesses.

A healthy diet can help build your immune system, making it easier for your body to fight off infection and function at its peak. Good nutrition is obtained through a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Currently, it is recommended that most adults eat at least 7-10 servings of fruit and vegetables each day to meet their nutritional needs. For many, this goal is difficult to meet, leaving a nutritional gap that can lead to disease and suboptimal health. Supplementing your diet with green food and phytonutrient supplements can fill this gap and lead you down the path to a healthier and happier lifestyle.

What are Green Foods?

Green foods are closely related to the better known dark leafy greens, but pack more nutrition into each serving. They include young cereal grasses like wheat and barley grass, as well as alfalfa, spinach, and parsley. Many important nutrients are found in Green Foods, such as:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Folate
  • Vitamin K
  • Vitamin E
  • Iron
  • Zinc

They are also a good source of fibre, keeping you full longer, which can help you maintain a healthy weight.

Green foods contain a high concentration of chlorophyll, the chemical that gives them their signature green color. Chlorophyll binds to carcinogens and other toxic matter in the body, assisting the liver and kidneys in their important role of efficiently eliminating these toxins from the body. It can help reduce inflammation, eliminate bad breath, and support the immune system. Chlorophyll has been shown to improve cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as playing an important role in cancer prevention.

Green foods are also rich in phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are the natural chemicals found in plant-based foods, and while not essential to life, they can increase health and help ward off disease. Dark leafy greens are a source of essential vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytonutrients.
